Preparing for your new dog

We’ve got all the information you need to help you get ready for a new arrival. Plus, learn about choosing the right dog and finding a rescue home or a breeder.

Getting a second dog

Lots of people really enjoy having a dog, and decide they’d like two, or even more! But how do you introduce the newcomer and help your dogs become best of friends? Here are our tips.

Introducing two puppies

  • introduce them on neutral territory;
  • keep both puppies on the lead so they can be easily separated;
  • if you need to separate them, distract them with play, then try again;
  • use plenty of treats and fun games, and avoid scolding and tension;
  • spend equal time with both puppies so they don’t scrap for your attention.

Introducing a new puppy to an older dog

  • introduce them on neutral territory;
  • keep the older dog outside until the newcomer falls asleep; then
  • keep a firm grip on the older dog's collar and let them sniff around the puppy;
  • make sure the older dog gets quiet time alone with you during the first few weeks.
